TIM ELLIS
USC Upstate
Engineering Technology Management
Students: Travis Suttles

Mr. Tim Ellis will be using Teleplace in his ETM courses this fall. His main goal is to have a 3D environment for students to use for the labs in his courses. With the 3D virtual world, students can interact, hear and speak to each other as well as complete assignments. When student teams need to meet, they can meet in the virtual world and not have to physically drive to one place. Student will gain experience in multisite communication using the virtual world. Teleplace is a good platform for sharing technical documents and working on spreadsheets as a group.

This proposal is to build a virtual campus for teacher education students where they can share and explore best practices. After the first year in teacher education, students are most often with other students in the same subject area (ex: language arts, math, special ed.) The virtual campus will allow students to staying touch with students from all of the program areas and share experiences. It may also serve as a gathering place for teacher education faculty and students to interact. They are currently using Second Life for their virtual platform.

ROXANNE AMERSON
Clemson University
RN – BS Nursing Education

Dr. Amerson is using a virtual world to build a typical migrant family home. Student volunteers will visit the migrant home in the 3D world and complete assessments typical of a home health nurse visit. Dr. Amerson will then add different scenarios to the migrant home where student nurses can practice completing home health visits. Dr. Amerson is currently using Second Life for her project.

DR. RON FULBRIGHT
USC Upstate
Informatics
Students: Chris Ernst and Kirstin Bolt

Dr. Fulbright has two graduate students that have worked this summer to make 2D problem formulator TRIZ diagrams in a 3D environment. TRIZ diagrams are used as a problem solving method often in manufacturing and engineering. The2D diagram can become quite large and cumbersome. Being able to visualize the diagram in a 3D setting may lead to more innovative approaches to a problem. They have been using Teleplace for their 3D platform.

Many medical facilities are using virtual worlds for medical training and simulations. The USC Upstate nursing group has begun to build a nursing home in a virtual world to use for student nursing training. Student nurses will be able to practice sets of skills that they will use in a typical nursing home setting prior to actual nursing home visits. In medical training in the virtual environment, instructors can adjust the patient scenario using a Heads Up Display (HUD) and the student nurse will then have to react to the changes presented. USC Upstate Nursing is using Second Life for their virtual world.

DR. SHEILA BACKMAN
Students:Yu-Chih Huang
Clemson University Department of Park, Recreation and Tourism Management

Dr. Backman and graduate student Yu-Chih Huang are using Second Life to develop collaborative spaces for students in the Tourism Markets and Supply courses. In particular, they want to develop a space that resembles Tanzania and can provide a sample of what a visitor to Tanzania would see and experience. They are exploring tourism sites in Second Life to identify the educational implications of using a virtual world to train and collaborate with tourism professionals.

This project is to create a simulation that connects the electronic health record system to a patient simulation. The School of Nursing uses an electronic health record system calledTeachEHR. Patient simulations are used to develop clinical skills. After testing of the new system, it will be incorporated into nursing courses taught at the University Center.
